THE Solomon Islands Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SICCI) is urging responsible authorities to take immediate action to tackle the issue of prolonged bus bay parking, which contributes to the worsening traffic congestion situation in Honiara City.
SICCI emphasised the need for sustainable solutions to enhance public safety and improve business logistics.
In a statement issued on Friday, SICCI highlighted that public transport parking poses a significant threat to public safety and exacerbates frustration amongst businesses reliant on efficient transportation.
The presence of vehicles parked in unauthorised locations along roadsides and within commercial areas has intensified traffic congestion, creating barriers for both pedestrians and emergency services.
According to SICCI, prolonged bus bay parking is becoming an all-too-common sight, with drivers routinely blocking access, particularly at critical points like the Central Market Bus Stop.
Chairlady of the SICCI Board, Namoi Kaluae stated, “This common prolonged bus bay parking contributes not only to congestion but also impedes productivity and economic efficiency within the city.
A well-regulated parking system is essential for improving traffic flow, accessibility, and overall business productivity.”
Ms Kaluae said SICCI recognises that addressing this issue requires a multi-sectoral approach, involving various stakeholders.
“We must establish a more effective parking system that enhances public safety for both businesses and customers.
“In light of these challenges, SICCI calls on all stakeholders, including government authorities, business owners, and the community, to come together and engage in meaningful discussions to develop comprehensive solutions to the illegal parking issue in Honiara,” she said.
